Should you really eliminate buzzwords from your profile -
Should you really eliminate buzzwords from your profile - LinkedIn has published their list of most overused words and phrases in membersâ LinkedIn Profiles for 2011. The number one most overused buzzword in LinkedIn profiles globally and for professionals based in the United States is âcreative.â Here is LinkedInâs 2011 list of the top 10 terms that are overused by professionals in the United States: 1. Creative 2. Organizational 3. Effective 4. Extensive experience 5. Track record 6. Motivated 7. Innovative 8. Problem solving 9. Communication skills 10. Dynamic Compare these to the 2010 most popular âoverused buzzwordsâ in LinkedIn profiles in the U.S.: 1. Extensive experience 2. Innovative 3. Motivated 4. Results-oriented 5. Dynamic 6. Proven track record 7. Team player 8. Fast-paced 9. Problem solver 10. Entrepreneurial LinkedIns official take on buzzwords comes from Nicole Williams, LinkedInâs Connection Director and author of Girl on Top: âEven though this yearâs list of overused terms differs from last yearâs, your objectives remain the same: Banish buzzwords from your profile. Use language that illustrates your unique professional accomplishments and experiences. Give concrete examples of results youâve achieved whenever possible and reference attributes that are specific to you.â While it is true that you need to make sure to highlight what is special or different about you, and most experts would agree you dont want an overly jargon-y, empty-sounding, buzzword filled resume or LinkedIn profile. But (as I also asked last year): is it time to do a search and destroy mission to eliminate all buzzwords from your resume and online profiles, as LinkedIn suggests? I still dont believe the answer is to eliminate all buzzwords. This is what I shared last year: Lets think about it why are these terms so popular? Because many of them describe exactly the type of person many employers want! Take a step back and think about this before your revise your profile. MSNBCs career expert, Eve Tahmincioglu responded to LinkedIns post last year with a measured, and I believe appropriate, answer. She asked, Are buzzwords really a bad thing?: Admit it, you probably have one or two of these on your resume or LinkedIn profile. But is that really a bad thing? Who cares if theyâre buzz words if they convey what you want? I couldnt agree more. Of course, if you read your profile and you list every single cliche without providing information that supports your claims, its time for a makeover. You need to show, not tell focus your efforts on telling a story that is both about you and targeted to your next employer. Its not a good idea to âoutlawâ words on resumes, even if they may be a little overused. Do I write resumes full of cliches? No, but I do target my clientsâ resumes to their desired employers! The most important thing to keep in mind is that your materials need to be as much about your employer as they are about you. Focus on their needs and make a clear case for why you have the skills and experience to accomplish their goals and to solve their problems. Might that mean including a few buzzwords? I think so there is a reason that buzzwords are buzzing! But, be sure your materials dont sound like the seemingly unthinking, cliche-spewing commentators. Can you change my mind? Do you think we should totally eliminate these buzzwords? photo by autan

Small Business Branding Strategies 5 Ways to Distinguish Your Company
Small Business Branding Strategies 5 Ways to Distinguish Your Company When QuadJobsâ"a website that connects local employers with college and grad students looking for workâ"launched in October 2014, the founders wanted to perfect their branding right out of the starting gate. The three co-founders were all veterans of the business world and knew that if their branding did not immediately convey their value proposition to potential users, they might not get a second chance. âWe realized early on that for people to understand the brand, you have to be hyperfocused about that,â says co-founder Betsey OâReilly, a former managing director at Deutsche Bank, who teamed up with Andra Newman, formerly head of recruitment for J. Crew and Abercrombie Fitch, and Bridie Loverro, founder of Blue State Coffee. So howâd they do it? To start, the team spent a lot of time researching their market and incorporating what they learned into their brand. When they found that potential employers want their work force to be college-educated, for example, they fine-tuned their marketing to highlight that. Their official tag line: âThe educated way to get things done.â This and similar branding refinements seem to be working. In the first six months QuadJobs has attracted about 1,000 subscribers who hire help through the site and worked with 8,000 students, according to OâReilly. Investors are also responding to the brand. QuadJobs raised $500,000 in initial funding and recently borrowed $300,000 in convertible debt. Want to get your own branding right from the start? Here are some strategies to help you strike the right note. 1) Donât expect to do it in one day. Building a brand is a multipart process that starts with getting clear on your mission and target audience and creating images and words that reflect that, says Donna Maria Coles Johnson, founder and CEO of the Indie Business Network, a 1,200 member trade organization for makers of handmade and artisanal products (think soaps to baked goods). âItâs not just how it looks,â she says. âItâs what you bring to the table as you become the walking, talking representative of that brand.â Build enough time into the launch of your business to reflect that. 2) Talk with potential customers. Getting as clear as possible about what youâll offer and how youâll explain that in your branding will ensure that you build a strong brand from the outset. One of the best ways to do this is by talking with people in your target market to find out their needs, so you can fine-tune your offering and your brand to reflect that. QuadJobs arranged about 10 focus group sessions with about 200 participantsâ"including both clients and employeesâ"to make sure the companyâs value proposition was clear. âWe really tried to pinpoint what the pain point was for both sides of the equation,â says OâReilly. That enabled its team to focus the site, and its branding, on what mattered to both groups. During the focus groups, employers often made comments like, âI am so much more comfortable bringing a college student into my house than a lot of the other options that are out there,â OâReilly said. Getting this feedback showed QuadJobsâ founders that the education level of their talent was their core differentiator. That in turn, shaped elements of its branding such as their tag line. Meanwhile, from the students in the focus groups, the company learned that finding gigs that they could fit into a demanding schedule of classes was very important. QuadJobs highlights the flexibility of its gigs on the siteâs home page. Many of the young people also hoped to build a work history that would help them get future jobs. That led to the development of the JobGPA, a compilation of employersâ reviews and comments about a studentâs performance that they can show to future employers. âWe think there is real value in these jobs,â says OâReilly. âThey show work ethic, commitment, and skills.â 3) Keep it simple. If you do a marketing campaign, whether on radio or the web, itâs tempting to try to cram a ton of information into your message. That will only confuse your audience, says OâReilly. It is better, she says, to stay clear and focus on your core offering. âYou have to assume people are hearing your message for the first timeâ"every time,â she says. 4) Connect on an emotional level. Sometimes conveying the vibe of your brand and your company is more important than trotting out a list of features you offer. âStart with an emotional connection,â recommends Jason Pomeranc, co-founder of SIXTY Hotels. His boutique-hotel chain has opened two properties in New York Cityâ"SIXTY SoHo and SIXTY LES (short for Lower East Side)â"and one in California, SIXTY Beverly Hills, since the firm launched in November 2013. Another outpost is slated to open in South Beach, Fla., in October. One way SIXTYHotels conveys its ambiance is through an online publication called alphasixty, which covers topics like art, fashion, and food. âWe donât talk about the hotel that much,â Pomeranc says. âWe talk about what we love.â In a previous hotel business he sold, he found customers really connected with a print magazine that the company published. It gave them a sense of what a hotel stay would feel like, he says. 5) Stay flexible. Donât expect the brand you launch to remain static. You may need to make some nips and tucks over time. âWhen your target audience responds to you, thatâs when the brand begins to be created,â says Coles Johnson. Many companies discover that their brand resonatesâ"but with a different group of customers, or in a different way, than they originally expected. One personal-care products company run by a husband-and-wife team in the Indie Business Network focused on female customers in the beginning. When the husband got involved in talking with their clientele, the business began to attract more men, Coles Johnson says. The couple changed the brand from Simply 7 Skincare to SoapCommander.com, she says. âWhether you start off knowing who your customers are, your customers will come and tell you if youâre right or youâre wrong,â says Coles Johnson. The trick is responding to unexpected opportunities. âIn order to create a successful brand, you have to follow where your customers are telling you that you need to go,â says Coles Johnson. This content can include articles and blog posts, as well as microsites. Crisis management:Should a crisis situation arise, WebiMax can quickly develop a strategy to minimize damage to your business's reputation. Positive promotion:WebiMax promotes your most positive content, making prospective customers more likely to come across it. Additional WebiMax Services Part of what makes WebiMax so appealing is that it's a full-service digital marketing agency. In addition to online reputation management, the company handles a range of digital marketing needs. This can be especially valuable in ensuring a consistent message and voice across all online outlets, such as your website, social networks and review pages. Here are some of the other services WebiMax offers: Search engine optimization Search engine marketing Web design Social media marketing Conversion optimization Online public relations Lead generation E-commerce solutions Mobile websites Link removal services Local marketing WebiMax will work with you to determine which of these marketing strategies make the most sense for your business. If you have additional questions and would like to speak with a WebiMax representative, you can contact them via phone, email or a contact form. We contacted WebiMax, posing as a small business owner who needed to build our company's online image, and we were pleased with the level of customer support we received. Our calls were quickly answered by helpful representatives. After getting a feel for what we needed, the representatives referred us to a specialist who develops proposals for new customers. We liked that the WebiMax representatives really took the time to listen to our needs and answer our questions. We appreciated that they never tried putting a hard sell on us. WebiMax has an experienced team of professionals, and each business is assigned a project manager who is dedicated to ensuring you're kept up to speed on the status of your campaigns. WebiMax understands the importance of confidentiality, so the company offers to sign a nondisclosure agreement. It's also encouraging thatWebiMax is an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau and maintains an A+ rating. As of November 2019, only three complaints had been filed against the company in the past three years. Limitations Although WebiMax is our choice for the best reputation management company for small businesses, it has some limitations. For example, the company's website doesn't provide many details about the reputation management services. There are no preset plans. That's an advantage for businesses that need customization, but it means potential clients must contact the company to learn which specific services WebiMax can offer their business. Because WebiMax doesn't list pricing on its website, it can be tough for small business owners to quickly gauge whether the company will be within their budget. However, you can easily contact WebiMax's customer support representatives to get customized details about pricing and services. Ready to choose a reputation management service? To Whom it May Concern How to Address a Cover Letter (Examples)
To Whom it May Concern How to Address a Cover Letter (Examples)Posted on November 9, 2017December 16, 2019 by Jon Shields When it comes to addressing a deckblatt letter, advice columns frequently spotlight these two pitfallsMistake 1 Failing to address your cover letter to a specific personMistake 2 Addressing a cover letter to the wrong personfruchtwein job postings dont specify who will be reading your cover letter. This puts job seekers in a tricky situation. Fixing the first mistake could cause you to make the second. So whats the best way to replace To Whom It May Concern atop your cover letter? Here are 4 top tips for figuring out who to address your cover letter to1) Dont Address the RecruiterFor many job openings, the first person you need to impress is a corporate recruiter. That doesnt mean you should address your cover letter to them.Recruiters do not read cover letters, a long-time healthcare recruiter told Jobscan. Bottom line. That might be an overstatement fruchtwein d ont, some do but many recruiters would admit that they arent the intended audience of a cover letter. Its mostly for the hiring manager, said a recruiter in the non-profit industry. For us recruiters, its just an extra step in an already elongated process. The healthcare recruiter agreed If youre sending it straight to a hiring manager whos looking at a much lower number of applicants, they might actually read that.Important note Cover letters arent what they say they areCover letters dont introduce your resume, they supplement it.In order to get your cover letter into the hands of a hiring manager who cares, yourresume has to get past the recruiter and, in many cases, the applicant tracking system theyre using.Try analyzing your resume below to receive instant optimization tips and recruiter insights from Jobscan so that the time you spend crafting your cover letter isnt a waste. The keyword analysis also shows exactly what to focus on in your cover letter.Jobscan Premium (one month free)even has a cover letter scan feature.2) Search the Company Website and LinkedInFew job postings list the hiring manager by anthroponym but many will tell you the position to which youd be reporting.Examples of reports to mentions in real job postings. With this information, a little detective work can reveal the anthroponym of the hiring manager. How to Search for a Hiring Managers Name on a Company WebsiteStart off by browsing the companys website. Look for an about page, company directory, or contact page. These pages are frequently linked at the very bottom of the website.Companies that feature employees on their about page make it much easier to figure out who will be reading your cover letter.A portion of Jobscans about page. Not only can you figure out who the hiring manager is from a page like this, you might also learn something about them that could come in handy in your cover letter or interview. You can also try searching the website. If the website doesnt have a built in search bar, use this syntax in Googleposition youll be reporting to sitecompany websiteThis will reveal hard-to-find about pages or other mentions of the position in the companys blog posts, press releases, and other pages. How to Search for a Hiring Manager on LinkedInIf a company doesnt list the hiring manager on their website, LinkedIn is your next best resource.Start off by searching for the company page on LinkedIn. Once youre on the companys LinkedIn page, click See all X employees on LinkedIn near the top.Depending on the company size, you can either browse all positions or narrow your results by adding search terms to the search bar (e.g. Marketing Manager) and utilizing the Current companies filters on the right side of the screen. On LinkedIn, you can filter your search for anyone currently working at a particular company.Search for the reports to position from the job listing. If it wasnt provided in the listing, search for keywords related to your prospective departmen t (e.g. marketing). If the company uses an intuitive corporate hierarchyyou should be able to determine who will be reading the cover letter.3) Contact the Company DirectlyThere is nothing wrong with calling or emailing the company to ask for the name of the hiring manager. Be polite and honest with the administrative assistant or customer service representative. Explain that youre about to apply for a job and youd like to know who you should address in your cover letter. If they arent able to provide an answer or transfer you to someone who knows, let it go. The last thing you need is word getting back to the hiring manager that you were pushy with one of their colleagues.4) If you still cant figure out the name of the hiring managerIf your investigation doesnt yield any results, to whom should you address your cover letter?Aim High When Addressing a Cover LetterYou dont want to address your cover letter to the wrong person, but if you do, its better to guess high than low. If you a re only able to track down a list of executives,Lily Zhang of The Muse suggeststhat addressing a cover letter to a high-level department head is still in your best interest. In the end, no one will fault you for addressing the letter higher up than necessary, she writes. This approach is definitely better than not using a name in your cover letter because it still shows the time and effort you took to find out who the department head is.To Whom it May Concern AlternativesUsing To Whom it May Concern is considered outdated and overly formal in many hiring circles. It also does nothing to help you stand out as its the go-to salutation most applicants use when addressing a cover letter to an unknown recipient. If you know the position youd be reporting to, use that. At very least, Dear Customer Experience Manager shows that you carefully read the job posting.Dear Hiring Manager or Dear Hiring Team are a couple generic alternatives that are a little less stuffy than To Whom it May Concer n. You can also address your letter to the appropriate department, for example To the Design Department or Dear Engineering Department. As with many aspects of the job application process, demonstrating that you put in some extra effort can make a difference. Doing some research before addressing a cover letter contributes to a positive first impression.Facebook Commentswpdevar_comment_1 span,wpdevar_comment_1 iframewidth100% important
